A POSTMASTER is set to lose his business after 32 years after he was told his post office was being relocated to a nearby shop.

David Mannings has declined to comment on Post Office Ltd's decision to pull out of Mountfields Post Office, in Mountfields Road, Taunton.

A public consultation is running until January 13 and the new office is expected to open in Upper Holway Stores in February or March.

Customers have contacted Post Office Ltd to protest at the decision.

One of them said: "He has worked for them for 32 years, worked all through both lockdowns and this is the way he is being treated.

"It's absolutely disgusting.

"This could just be the thin end of the wedge for all local post offices - Galmington, Bishop's Hull, Staplegrove, Priorswood etc."

A Post Office Ltd spokesperson said the Upper Holway Road Post Office branch would operate as a "local style branch" They added: "We’re proposing this move as part of the ongoing modernisation of our branch network.

"We are confident that introducing a local style branch alongside a successful retail store is the most effective way to safeguard sustainable post office services in the local community into the future."
