A BROOCH measuring just 5.5cm wide is expected to reach between £600 and £800 at auction.
The oval brooch, decorated the Doves of Pliny in micro mosaics, is one of the lots being sold by Charterhouse in a two-day online specialist auction of silver, jewellery and watches with antiques and interiors next month.
It originates from Italy circa 1905 and is made of micro mosaic - featuring the Doves of Pliny made from tiny pieces of hardstone.
The original Doves of Pliny image comes from a Roman floor mosaic discovered in 1737 at Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli, which in turn is believed to be a copy of a lost ancient Greek mosaic at Pergamon.
The brooch, being sold by a collector from near Taunton, is in a gold mount and having survived two world wars and numerous owners, remains in beautiful condition.
It comes in the original fitted box, retailed by Charles Frodsham in Bond Street, London.
“The market remains strong for silver, jewellery and watches despite being in a national lockdown,” said Charterhouse auctioneer, Richard Bromell.
“Collectors and dealers are always hungry for good lots such as this beautiful brooch.
"With bidding live online via the internet our auctions are easily accessible and this combined with our in-house post and packing service results in a swift and easy delivery service worldwide.”
Charterhouse is now accepting entries for this auction silver, jewellery & watches on Thursday, February 4, and wine, port & whisky on February 5.
Classic and vintage cars in April and classic and vintage motorcycles will go under the hammer in May.
