WEYMOUTH’s newest supermarket has opened its doors for the first time on Tuesday morning (January 19), with dozens of jobs created.

The Food Warehouse, run by retail giants Iceland, opened at 8am inside the former Aldi at Jubilee Retail Park.

The retail chain sells frozen, chilled, and fresh food as well as homeware, cleaning products, toys, and alcohol at affordable prices.

Three people were stood outside the supermarket as they were welcomed in by the store’s management and staff members at 8am.

Customers are required to use hand sanitiser and antibacterial spray on its trolleys and baskets before entering the store.

Plenty of social distancing measures signs are around the store, which reminds people to keep two metres apart and wear face coverings.

Red and white branded boarding has been installed around the front of the supermarket, promising customers “big deals, choice, and packs” at Food Warehouse.

The Food Warehouse has a spacious layout, with rows of low aisles so items are easy to spot from afar and are more accessible to access.

Customers who left the store with a trolley full of shopping seemed satisfied with the town’s newest supermarket, especially after Aldi relocated out of the retail park in early September.

Sian, who was the first customer out of Food Warehouse, visited the store to purchase a few essential items on her birthday.

She said: "It's really good and spacious and more accessible than the Iceland in town. It is definitely something that Weymouth needs."

One customer, Mrs Robins, said she was happy she could get the products she wanted, but didn't think Food Warehouse was any cheaper than other stores.

Another shopper said: "The supermarket is nice and spacious inside, especially compared to how it was when it was Lidl. The staff were really friendly and the social distancing rules were followed.

"I will probably come here for my weekly shop as it's affordable and nearest shop to me."

The new supermarket has created 30 jobs as Food Warehouse previously recruited new employees to work part time and full-time including home delivery drivers, team leaders, retail assistants and online shopping pickers.

“Local residents can also look out for the store opening Facebook event a week prior to opening for a chance to win a £50 voucher to spend in store.”

Food Warehouse will be open from 8am to 8pm between Monday and Saturday and between 10am to 4pm on Sundays.
