THERE is a possibility a new cycle route could be created between Taunton and Wellington, if a suitable route is found.

A feasibility study for the route was undertaken in 2018 by Sustrans and part funded by Taunton Deane Borough Council, looking at a cycle path to the north of the A38.

But this route crossed over many different parcels of land owned by different people.

However, there was a meeting a couple of weeks ago with Taunton Area Cycling Campaign, Sustrans, council members and so on, as well as David Sheppy, who suggested planning the route to the south of the A38.

Wellington Town Council discussed the update at a meeting of full council on Monday, April 12.

"It is wonderful to see how many people have committed to cycling over the lockdown," said councillor Sean Pringle-Kosikowsky.

"I just hate the way it seems our society is not supporting them, as the road is not safe for them to be on.

"I think more than anything this route should be a priority above all others."

But Cllr John Thorne said there needs to be a "definitive plan" and finding funding is a crucial next step.

"I don’t think there was ever any intention this would be followed through without any funding or public support," he said.

"The next stage would be find the money to do it.

"The Taunton Area Cycling Campaign are very supportive, but just don’t have the funds to put anything into practise. If they can then find the funding, they can put strategies in place."

Somerset County Council (SCC) said they are "excited" about the prospect of the new cycle path, but admit the plans are still "early doors".

“The project is complex and is being led by Taunton Area Cycling Campaign, who have asked Somerset County Council to join the team, alongside Somerset West and Taunton District Council and other local councils," said a spokesperson for SCC.

“Before the next steps can be taken, a detailed route study will be crucial in helping to identify the relevant land ownerships as it is unlikely the whole scheme can be built within the existing highway boundaries. Once established, the next steps could involve a land acquisition strategy, design options and to seek funding, before the procurement of a construction contract can begin.”
