BUSINESS owners and shoppers are hoping the congestion that has plagued Taunton all week will disappear for the next three days.

Highways officials agreed to remove the traffic lights in Paul Street over the bank holiday weekend.

That should help cut traffic jams, although there are still some restrictions in place.

The traffic chaos this week has been caused by traffic controls in conjunction with roadworks in the area of the new apartment block built on the site of the former Quantock House, in Paul Street.

A Travel Somerset spokesperson said: "We have made good progress with the developer and as a result, traffic lights will be removed for the Bank Holiday weekend.

"Restrictions still apply but two-way traffic will be in place."

But the move looks to be short lived, with the traffic lights back on from Tuesday.

The spokesperson added: "When the works recommence on Tuesday, lights will return - but we've made some other changes which should improve traffic flow as people get back on the road."
