PROPOSALS have been unveiled for a new homes development on the site of a former garden centre on the outskirts of Wellington.

Marshwood Homes wants to build nine homes on land east of Bagley Road, in Rockwell Green.

A planning application to Somerset West and Taunton Council says there would also be access, parking, turning and landscaping.

The 0.27-hectare site, which features commercial units on two sides, is currently scrubland, but used to be Lincot Nurseries Garden Centre.

Six of the homes would be three-bedroom semi-detached houses, while the other three would be two-bedroomed in a terrace.

Marshwood Homes would retain a number of the properties to rent out.

A report to the planners says: "The proposed development of nine dwellings is considered to represent a sustainable form of development.

"The application site is located within the village of Rockwell Green and is within the settlement boundary for Wellington. The principle of residential development within settlement boundaries is supported.

"The proposed development has been carefully designed so as not to have a harmful impact on existing properties and is of a suitable scale and design so as to be in keeping with the prevailing character of the area.

"The proposed site layout has been purposefully designed so as to ensure that future residents are not adversely affected by the neighbouring commercial uses.

"The proposed means of access is considered to be safe and achieves the appropriate visibility splays for the speed and character of the road."
