COASTGUARDS from Watchet were halfway through a training session when they were called out to reports of a couple stranded by the incoming tide at Blue Anchor.

The two along with their dog were unfamiliar with the area and unable to reach safety on their own.

The coastguards and volunteers from Minehead RNLI Lifeboat Station headed to the scene during yesterday evening's emergency.

A coastguards spokesperson said: "Our officer in charge was able to confirm that the couple and pet dog, who were on holiday staying locally, were not injured. However they were shaken by the situation they had found themselves in.

Coastguard rescue officers led the couple and their pet up a concealed path and across the rock armour to safety.

The spokesperson added: "Having made it to the safety of the road the couple and pet dog were confirmed not to require any further assistance.

"Safety advice relating to how to check the tide times and some local coastal advice for our stretch of coastline was given, so they could enjoy their holiday after their experience.

We remind anyone not familiar with the local coastline to speak to a local or telephone the coastguard for advice. Tide times can be found on online or at the local marina and harbours.

"In a coastal emergency remember to dial 999 and ask for the coastguard."
