THE owner of a village pub says business has been "totally killed" this week by a road closure.

Jane Bishop says there has been a lack of customers at the Farmers Arms, in Combe Florey, because of the closure of a section of the A358.

She said: "The current road closure of the A358 at Combe Florey has totally killed our business this week.

"Somerset County Highways have also allowed Wessex Water a road closure at West Bagborough from today that is causing total madness to the area - cars, lorries and horse boxes meeting head on in the back lane.

"Forward planning is sadly lacking within Somerset County Council Highways."

A Somerset County Council spokesperson said: “This is a really crucial scheme to ensure the road is fit for purpose for many years to come and to improve safety - unfortunately doing nothing is not an option.

“We understand any road closure is disruptive and have worked hard to minimise this by providing considerable advanced notice and working closely with local businesses to offer our support. This led to a decision to keep the closure to off-peak hours, 9.30am to 3.30pm on week days only. We're pleased to confirm the scheme is progressing well and we're on track to finish by 25 June as planned.”
