A WELLINGTON student has come second place in a national music competition.

Fiore Newland, who attends Court Fields School, came second in a composing competition on the theme of 'release' at Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

She entered the digital music category with an original piece entitled 'Supercalifragilistiespialidoso' for use in video games.

Fiore said: “It’s based on the idea of someone trying to escape an alien invasion as this fits with the competition theme of ‘release’.

"The piece gets more and more distraught and panic inducing as it goes on.

"I’m always recording sounds and samples in everyday life wherever I go and I used lots of these in the composition.”

At an awards ceremony in London, Fiore won second place and prize money of £200.

Fiore has been attending music and production classes at the Centre for Young Musicians in Taunton (CYMT) for the past two years.

Head of CYMT, Rachael Parvin, said: “Reaching the finals in itself was a huge accolade as there were a huge number of entries and all at such an exceptional standard.

"Here at CYMT we’re extremely proud of Fiore. We’re delighted we’re able to offer her and other young people in the Somerset this kind of musical training outside of London.

"Fiore finding her creative voice like this and producing work of this professional standard is what we’re all about here at CYMT.”

CYMT is part of Guildhall School and offers young people in Somerset aged 5-18 access to music education.

Charlotte Eve, CYMT development administrator, added: “CYMT is such a unique opportunity for young people in Somerset.

"If this kind of training in music production and pop, rock, jazz, classical music, singing and drama existed when I was younger it would have been mind-blowing.

"We’re now taking on new students for this September and all abilities are welcome.

"We offer lots of bursaries too so everyone can access our centre.

"Get in touch with us today to find out about joining CYMT and having a free taster session.”
