A FORMER Kings College student and her Team GB field hockey team have secured the bronze medal in Tokyo after beating India 4-3.

The match ensures Team GB will stay on the Olympic podium for the third Olympics in a row.

This is the second medal at the games for Maddie Hinch after the team won gold in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

Goals from Ellie Rayer, Sarah Robertson, Hollie Pearne-Webb and Grace Balsdon held off a spirited India comeback.

Whilst some important saves from Maddie made sure Team GB held onto the lead, she said this game sums up the last five years.

“It would have been very easy to crumble, I've had some pretty low moments since Rio de Janeiro," she said.

"I put an awful lot of pressure on myself, but the one thing I said to myself coming here was that I would enjoy it whatever happens. I have done that.”

Maddie, 32, believes heading to the Paris Olympics in 2024 will depend on her continued love of the game.

“I have found my love for the game again,” she said.

“If I still feel I can contribute to this team and help them win medals, I will be there, but I have got to start looking after myself more and make sure I am in a good place.”

Team GB field hockey captain, Hollie Pearne-Webb, 30, said she is so proud of the squad.

“Olympic bronze, even just a few months ago, was in our wildest dreams," she added.

"I’m so proud of all the girls, the whole squad, the whole support staff that have been involved."

This was Great Britain's 52nd medal in Tokyo, meaning Team GB have now exceeded the 51 they won at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
