PEOPLE in Taunton Deane will be able to recycle more items in their kerbside boxes within weeks.

Somerset Waste Partnership has announced it is expanding weekly recycling collections to 56,000 households from the start of November.

Additional items residents in Taunton, Wellington, Wiveliscombe and surrounding villages will be able to put out under the Recycle More scheme are plastic pots, tubs and trays; food and drink cartons; small batteries; and small electrical items.

Somerset County Gazette:

The initiative means there will be less rubbish going to landfill, so wheelie bins or black sacks will be collected every three weeks instead of fortnightly.

Collection days will change for more than half of households.

Every home will have a new recycling container – a ‘Bright Blue Bag’ - delivered soon before the new service starts.

Somerset County Gazette:

All Taunton Deane residents will be sent information about Recycle More around six weeks and three weeks before launch, including a collection day calendar and guide to what recycling goes into which container.

Mickey Green, SWP managing director, said: “Recycle More means everyone doing things a little differently, so it’s good to start thinking and preparing now – but please do not stockpile material for the new collections.

"Almost all the recycling we collected last year stayed in the UK to be turned into new products and packaging.

"Somerset has a great recycling record, but still half the contents of the average bin could have been recycled."

Somerset County Gazette:

Recycle More already operates in Mendip and South Somerset, delivering more than 100 tonnes of extra recycling every week.

West Somerset and Sedgemoor are scheduled to get the new service at the same time early in 2022.

Recycle More is making it easier for everyone to do even more, protecting the environment and helping tackle climate change.

And you can start preparing for Recycle More now by making sure you have the container you need to make full use of weekly collections.

Everyone can have a green and a black recycling box, plus a food waste bin. New or replacement containers can be ordered free of charge from the SWP website using the My Waste Service feature or by calling your local district council.
