A STREET fair in a Somerset town is set to take place at the end of this month.

Preparations for the Wellington Street Fair, which is part of the Welly Welcome Weekend, are well underway.

As part of the welcome weekend, there is also a Proms in the Park event with performances from the Wellington Operatic Society and Wellington Silver Band.

During the street fair, there will be around 45 stalls run by local crafters, community organisations, sports clubs and schools as well as live entertainment with bands playing outside the Green Dragon pub and in the town centre.

Performances will include the High Park Music Students, Flute Trio, Bootstrap Border, Wiveliscombe Wind Band, Reminiscence Learning Choir, Skintight Samba, Wellington Majorettes and The Wellington Ukes.

Annette Kirk, deputy town clerk who is organising the event on behalf of Wellington Town Council, said: "It’s going to be a great day and a real opportunity to bring the community together after what has been a really difficult 18 months.

"We hope that lots of people will visit the fair to look at the stalls, support our community groups who have been through a really challenging time and enjoy the entertainment."

There will also be a barbecue, a hog roast and an ice cream van at the Vintage Inn.

A face painter will be at the fair too and the Glitter Fairy, Alice and The White Rabbit and Frozen Princess stilt walkers will be walking around the town during the day.

The Wellington Street Fair will take place on Saturday, September 25. And Proms in the Park will take place on Sunday, September 26.

The high street and South Street will be closed to traffic from 6am until 6pm on Saturday, with the fair running from 10am until 4pm.

The town council received a Government grant under the Emergency Town Centre Recovery Fund, which enabled it to support the Welly Welcome Weekend events.
