A TAUNTON doctor has been named Cygnet Medical Leader of the Year at a national awards ceremony for his work to support people struggling with mental illness.

Dr Dave Barker, medical director at Cygnet Hospital Taunton, a specialist inpatient mental health service in Orchard Portman for men with mental health problems, was singled out for his personal leadership and dedication to colleagues and patients.

Receiving the award during the Cygnet Annual Psychiatrists Conference and National Awards 2021, Dr Barker said: "I am ever so delighted to receive this inaugural award.

"I have been greatly supported by all staff at Cygnet Hospital Taunton and senior management from local to regional level.

"Without this support I simply would not be able to provide the best service I can.

"So, this award is for Cygnet Taunton and the regional team as much as for myself.”

Organised by Cygnet Health Care, an independent provider of specialised mental health services for the NHS and local authorities, the Cygnet Medical Leader of the Year recognises a Cygnet psychiatrist who has demonstrated and contributed to medical leadership.

They will have developed their personal leadership qualities, demonstrated collaborative working, supported services with management and development and encouraged colleagues to follow the Cygnet clinical strategy.

Presenting the award, Stephen Firn, independent non-executive director at Cygnet Health Care, said: “To all his consultants and doctors, Dr Barker is an exceptional medical director.

"The entire multi-disciplinary team appreciate the enormous dedication and integrity he shows in his work at all times.”
