A LANDMARK Victorian building in Taunton is set to re-open in January as a 'state-of-the-art' workspace.

And people can visit the space next month with a guided hard-hat tour of the building on St Augustine Street.

The building, called the Collar Factory, includes 24 studio spaces ranging from 20 to 60 meters squared, as well as co-working desks, workpods and an event space.

Originally built in 1899 as a collar factory for around 800 workers, the building later served as a printers before being bought by Somerset Cricket Club, who sold it to current owner Forward Space in 2008.

Frome-based Forward Space submit a planning application to refurbish the existing building in 2017.

“We are incredibly excited to be opening our first building in Taunton," said Gavin Eddy, CEO of Forward Space.

"Collar Factory is our biggest project to date and we believe we have created something really special that will become part of the fabric of the town.”

Working with Bristol-based design studio, Shape, the Grade II listed former Victorian factory has now been completed renovated with concrete wooden floors, high ceilings, exposed brick walls and 100 windows.

Tom Meacock, founder at Shape Studio, added: “It has been a real pleasure to work on this building.

"Until recently, the former textile factory was in a state of disrepair.

"Now, a team of skilled craftspeople are restoring the building to its former glory.

"The building's character has been carefully preserved through the retention of many of its original features which have in turn inspired the design of the interior which we look forward to sharing more of over the coming months.”

The tours will take place on Wednesday, October 13, from 12pm until 4pm.

Co-working tariffs at the space start from £25 a month.
