THERE was singing and dancing in the streets of Taunton on Saturday.

Scores of people turned out to join in the fun of the Sound of the Streets Festival in and around the town centre.

The Big Song and Dance event, organised and led by Tim Hill and his nine-piece band Tongues of Fire, gave people the chance for a get-together following "18 months of isolation and quiet".

People were encouraged to join in with popular, well-known songs as well as dancing along to the music.

Castle Green was abuzz with five street bands while music was also taken to nearby streets.

The festival was part of the Taunton Together programme to help the town recover from the impact of Covid-19 and was funded by the Taunton Emergency Recovery Working Group Fund.

The day was a taster for larger festivals planned over the next three years.

Those festivals will feature top national and international bands as well as involving local schools and young musicians and exploring Somerset’s own rich traditions of outdoor music and celebrations.
