CAR owners could soon be taking their vehicles for an MOT in a former builders' merchants in Wellington.

Plans have been unveiled to move South Street Motors into the former Travis Perkins warehouse unit on Blackdown Business Park, in Sylvan Road.

A planning application for a change of use of the premises has been submitted to Somerset West and Taunton Council.

If granted by the council, the building and external compound would be used as a vehicle repair workshop and MOT testing station.

A planning application in 2004 gave permission for the premises to be used by builders' timber and plumbing merchants - it was previously a vehicular repair workshop.

A statement in the application says: "Until recently, the business unit and external area operated as a builders merchants.

"The proposal will allow the premises to revert back to its previous use of a Vehicular Repair Workshop and MOT Station.

"As part of the change of use application, a new roller shutter door will be introduced on the northern elevation. This will match the existing roller shutter currently located on the same elevation.

"The main external fabric of the building will be retained."
