A NATIONAL gym chain has announced its intention to open in Taunton.

PureGym, which has hundreds of gyms across the country, is planning to launch on an edge-of-town retail site.

It has applied to Somerset West and Taunton Council planners to carry out external alterations of the former PC World unit at Hankridge Farm.

The planning application, on behalf of "the intended occupier" PureGym, also includes proposals to instal plant.

If granted the changes to the premises would include new main entrance doors and the infilling of an existing entrance door.

There would also be parking for up to 12 bikes.

The application says: "The proposed external alterations are minor in nature and will not have any significant impacts on the appearance of the existing building.

"Alterations to the ‘shopfront’ will complement the existing design and the installation of bi-folding double doors will improve access, including for the mobility impaired.

"The proposed addition of cycle stands will promote sustainable modes of transport.

"The proposed plant will be located to the rear elevations, adjoining the M5 motorway and in a position that is a considerable distance from any noise-sensitive properties.

"As such they will have no impacts on amenities, we therefore consider that the proposals will accord with relevant local planning policies."

West Monkton Parish Council, whose patch includes Hankridge has submitted a statement to SWT saying it "supports the grant of this application".

PureGym, which already operates in Bridgwater and Weston-super-Mare, also plans to open a gym in Yeovil early next year.
