HOUSEHOLDERS in Taunton Deane will be able to put out extra items for recycling every week from Monday (November 1).

People have been sent a calendar of their new collection days ahead of Recycle More launching in and around Taunton, Wellington and Wiveliscombe. Collection days will be changing for many homes.

With less waste going to landfill under the new system, rubbish will be collected every three weeks instead of fortnightly.

The calendar also shows if you are due an extra rubbish collection this Saturday (October 30) or next Saturday (6 November). These will make sure no-one has to wait more than three weeks between rubbish collections as we move to the new service.

Distribution of a new recycling container – the Bright Blue Bag – for all households started last week and deliveries will continue right up until this Friday (October 29).

Recycle More is already running in Mendip and South Somerset and in both districts it is seeing more than 100 extra tonnes of recycling collected each week.

The service adds the following items to the weekly collections:

  • Plastic pots, tubs and trays;
  • Food and drink cartons;
  • Small batteries;
  • Small electrical items.

Residents will need to put things into different containers.

The Bright Blue Bags should be used for:

  • Plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays (rinsed and squashed/nested);
  • Tins and cans (rinsed and, if safe, crushed);
  • Aerosols (empty);
  • Foil (rinsed).

Green box;

Glass bottles and jars, and cartons, including Tetra Pak.

Black box – paper and card.

Brown food waste bin – all food waste.

Household electricals go in an untied carrier bag on top of recycling - bags will be returned.

Small batteries go into tied bread bags, freezer or similar see-through bags.
