FOUR Somerset drivers have been fined hundreds of pounds for offences they committed on roads in Wales and the south east.

Three of the drivers were charged for speeding offences, while one pleaded guilty to driving without third-party insurance.

All four drivers were also handed penalty points and two have been disqualified from driving – one of them for four years.

Grant Lorey

A man from Wellington has been disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for four years due to repeat offending after pleading guilty to exceeding a speed limit by 25mph.

Grant Lorey, of Ford Street, was caught driving a Mini Cooper at 75mph on a stretch of the M4 near Newport with a 50mph speed limit in place.  

He committed the offence while driving westbound between junctions 23A and 24.

Lorey, 41, appeared at Cwmbran Magistrates' Court on Friday, October 22.

Alongside his disqualification, he received a fine of £100 and was ordered to pay a surcharge of £34 to fund victim services and costs of £90.

He has until November 19 to pay a total of £224.

Dragos Petru

A man from Yeovil was ordered to pay £344 at Lavender Hill Magistrates’ Court in London last week (Tuesday, October 19).

Petru, of Victoria Road, was caught driving at 49mph on an elevated section of the M4 in Brentford, west London.

The stretch of road he was driving on, near Clayponds Avenue and Transport Avenue, had a 40mph speed limit in place.

Petru, 30, committed the offence at 1:14am on Monday, March 8.

He was fined £220 and ordered to pay a £34 surcharge to fund victim services and £90 in costs.

Petru has until November 15 to pay a total of £344.

He was also handed three penalty points.

Adam Shaw

On Friday, April 16, Shaw, 46, was caught driving a BMW at 46mph on the A316 (Twickenham Road) in Richmond – exceeding a 40mph speed limit.

Shaw, of Huish Gardens, was fined £161 after pleading guilty to the offence at Lavender Hill Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, October 19.

He must also pay a £34 surcharge and costs of £90 by November 3.

His driving record was endorsed with three points.

Dennis Marable

Marable, of Stevens Close, Shepton Mallet, has been ordered to pay a total of £244 after pleading guilty to driving without third-party insurance.

Marable, 41, has also been disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for six months due to repeat offending.

The 41-year-old was driving a Vauxhall Astra eastbound between junctions 24 and 23A of the M4 when he was caught on January 30. 

Marable was fined £120 for the offence.

Without a guilty plea, he would have been fined £180.

Alongside the fine, he must pay a £34 surcharge and costs of £90.

He will pay his balance in instalments of £20 per month starting on November 19.
