BORIS Johnson has warned it is “one minute to midnight on that doomsday clock and we need to act now” over the environment at the COP26 conference in Glasgow.

And here in Somerset, activists from environmental campaign group Extinction Rebellion have been out in the County Town's High Street, talking to residents about the conference and what it means.

"As floods increase and wildfires rage, there has never been a more urgent moment to end the destruction of the natural world," said a group spokesperson.

"The solutions are out there yet the gap between promises and actions set by governments across the world is still enormous and the United Nations has declared "Code Red " for humanity with a warning that carbon emissions must be quickly and significantly reduced in order to avert a climate and ecological disaster.

"This conference is seen as the "last chance" to achieve this.

"Engaging with the public has also been an opportunity to discuss the importance of climate justice which crucially would ensure that the most affected and least responsible in the global south receive the financial support promised from the richer more powerful countries, who are the most responsible for creating climate and environmental chaos."

Now, the group is inviting people to join them in two vigils for all the victims of climate change and the destruction of the natural world.

The vigils will take place in Taunton High Street from 11am to noon on November 7 and 9.

Further outreach activity on November 12 and 13 will be centred on inviting the community to share ideas about how we can work together to build resilience and hope in these difficult times, they said.
