A POPULAR Taunton street food outlet is offering up a day's takings to help children in need have a better Christmas.

On Saturday (November 27), Silvan's, which is regularly found in North Street, near Costa, will donate takings to Love Musgrove, the charity arm of the county town's Musgrove Park Hospital, and Sparkle, which provides gifts to local families in need.

The van, which is run by Aksen Karaalp, confirmed the news on its Facebook page.

"Many of you know that we are a small independent family business blessed with six children," it said.

"Christmas is just around the corner and this makes us think of the children who may have more of a challenging Christmas than ours.

"This Saturday, all of the money we take will turned into gifts and donated to Love Musgrove and Sparkle.

"Love Musgrove will give the gifts to those children who will spend Christmas in hospital and Sparkle give gifts to those children living in difficult circumstances in Taunton.

"Please come and get your lunch and give to charity - two birds, one stone and all that."

So far, donations through the Facebook page have reached £55, with a boost during busy weekend trade expected on Saturday.

Silvan's has been a popular eatery for Taunton shoppers for the past four years, with a menu featuring healthy wraps and a range of children's options.

Speaking in 2018, Aksen said his philosophy was to keep things fresh and bringing his Turkish cookery background to the fore.

"I enjoy being creative and creating new menus," he said.

"Having worked in restaurants in Eastern Turkey I feel I can bring the flavour of my country to these wraps.

"Eastern Turkey is the heart of wraps as this is the area they come from originally."
