A POPULAR Christmas food and drink festival has been cancelled due to the weather.

The eat:festivals event in Taunton, which was supposed to take place on Saturday (November 27), is no longer going ahead due to the yellow weather warning issued by the Met Office.

The yellow weather warning for wind is due to last from midnight tonight (November 26) until 6pm tomorrow.

Organiser of eat:Taunton, Bev Milner Simonds, said: "We have been in frequent communication with the Met Office all week, checking in on the weather front that is landing on Friday night.

"With the increased certainty that we will see sustained wind speeds of 20 - 30mph all day and gusts over over 45mph we cannot take the risk for our visitors, producers or their stock.

"We have spent the last couple of days on the phone to local partners, groups and the council trying to secure a vacant retail unit or hall but nothing is available.

"We hope that locals find other outlets and options for local food and drink in the runup to Christmas - like the weekly Farmers' Market or one of the other winter fairs happening.

"Do keep any eye on our social media over the weekend as we will be sharing content from our producers who offer delivery and collection options.

"We look forward to returning to the town centre on 14 May and 26 November 2022."

The next eat:festivals events in Somerset will be on December 4 in Nailsea, December 11 in Yeovil, and December 12 in Weston-super-Mare.
