EMERGENCY accommodation is being offered to rough sleepers from today (November 26).
Homeless residents in West Somerset and Taunton will be offered beds due to the high winds and sub-zero temperatures forecast this weekend.
Somerset West and Taunton Council (SWT) has activated its Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP). This seeks to identify and accommodate rough sleepers during periods of extreme weather.
A spokesperson for SWT said: "SWT’s Rough Sleeper Initiative Team is very much focused on early intervention and through its outreach service and networking with partner agencies, works tirelessly to identify and accommodate rough sleepers prior to adverse changes in weather.
"Bed spaces will be available through the SWEP’s Winter Provision, as well as additional services offered through other local homelessness agencies."
Dependent on the weather forecast for next week, the SWEP is expected to be deactivated on Monday, November 29.
If you are concerned about individuals sleeping rough, you can report the sighting via streetlink.org.uk, or you can call on 0300 500 0914 (weekends only) or email rsi@somersetwestandtaunton.gov.uk.
