LIDL has announced its new Taunton supermarket will open on Saturday (December 4).

The opening times of the store in Roman Road will be 7am to 10pm Mondays to Saturdays and 10am to 4pm on Sundays.

Construction workers are putting the final touches to the premises on the site of a former Lidl store and the neighbouring Six Acres day centre, which catered for people with learning difficulties until it closed in 2019.

Occupying 2,175sq m and wit h124 parking spaces, the new store will be much larger than the previous one, which was demolished earlier this year.

The old Roman Road store was one of the first Lidls in the UK when it opened in 1996.

But the company decided it was too small and out of date "to provide the quality of offer and shopping environment that customers expect".

The company has previously said the number of full time staff will probably increase from eight to 15, while there would be 25 part timers, up from the current 11.

A member of staff said the new store would be bigger than the one in Castle Street, which opened at the end of 2015 after the Lidl in Wood Street was demolished.

When Lidl submitted a planning application for the new store, a company spokesperson told the County Gazette: "We remain committed to delivering a larger, modernised store in Taunton to serve the local community an even greater range of our high quality and great value produce, and deliver an improved shopping experience."
