CHRISTMAS shoppers are being offered free parking over the coming weeks.

To support festive trading, Somerset West and Taunton Council is scrapping charges in council car parks.

There will be free all-day parking in Dulverton, Dunster, Minehead, Porlock, Watchet, Wellington and Williton on Saturdays December 4, 11 and 18. Vehicle owners will also be excused having to pay in Dulverton on Sunday (December 5) for the annual Dulverton by Starlight event.

Free parking will also be available after 3pm on the same three Saturdays in council car parks in Taunton, except for Kilkenny car park, which is a long stay commuter car park.

Cllr Mike Rigby, SWT executive member for planning and transport, said: “We're pleased to offer our popular free parking incentive again this year to help traders and retailers over the festive period.

“Businesses have endured much hardship over the last two years, so I encourage residents and visitors to support their recovery by taking advantage of this offer, and I wish them a safe and welcoming experience when visiting our towns and villages.”

Visitors seeking to attend any of the festive events or shopping opportunities planned for the district are advised to check for Covid-19 symptoms beforehand and to take a rapid lateral flow test if possible.

Anyone displaying symptoms should self-isolate immediately and get a free NHS test.

Face coverings must be worn on public transport and in shops. The use of face coverings is recommended to help prevent the spread of Covid-19 through crowded areas.
