He sadly died a few days later.

In a statement, his family said: "It is with deep sorrow that James Wright – known as Paddy to friends and family – sadly passed away on Tuesday morning.

“He was a lovely, happy joking family man. Those whom he met on his life’s journey would have laughs and jokes with him aplenty. He was a gentleman to all. He loved to help anyone.

“Even in his final hours he continued to joke saying the nurses found him attractive as they were all over him.

“He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. He brought sunshine and laughter to us all.”

The van driver is currently assisting Avon and Somerset Police with the investigation.

"Our thoughts are with James' family at this difficult time," said a spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police.

"We’re keen to hear from any witnesses and anyone who may have dashcam or CCTV footage.

"Please call 101 and give reference number 5221279138."
