KING'S College are through to the final 16 of the National Under 15 Schools Rugby Cup after beating their Redruth School counterparts 12-10 at the end of a very tough encounter.

Having already beaten King Edwards College ,Totnes, and near neighbours Taunton School to reach this stage of the competition that started off with 256 entries this was an epic encounter played at Redruth RFC.

In the first half King’s played with a strong wind and after some territorial pressure took the lead through a close range try from Tom B that was converted by Hal S.

King’s then conceded several penalties which gave Redruth a foothold in the game and they duly scored in the corner.

Towards the end of the first half a period of pressure by King’s led to a try in the corner for Matthew C which gave them a 12-5 half-time lead.

Soon after the break King’s, conceded another penalty which Redruth kicked to the corner and scored from the line out drive, missing the conversion.

With increasing wind and rain in the second half, it looked ominous for King’s playing against the elements and a team with momentum.

Despite this, they showed tenacity in defence and some decisive turnovers deep in their own 22. They also successfully played the ball out of their half an a few occasions and with some better execution could have stretched the lead.

In the closing minutes Redruth were awarded another penalty 40 metres out which they chose to kick for goal but in the swirling wind, the ball struck the post and King’s were able to clear their lines and held out to jubilant scenes at the end.

Ed Lewsey the Head of Rugby at King’s said: “Overall this was a stern test for King’s with plenty of lessons learnt and we are now in the last 16, where we play Clifton at home in January.”
