If you’re considering letting a dog into your life – could one of these four be your perfect match?

St Giles Animal Rescue is responsible for taking and caring for all of the stray dogs in the Somerset West & Taunton and South Somerset areas.

Many are never claimed by their owners and so become available for adoption.

The centre also board dogs and cats on behalf of the RSPCA South East and South West branch and help find them forever homes too.

In addition to this, they also care for many other rescue cats and dogs that come in direct from families no longer able to care for them.

They never rehome an animal without careful assessment and a home visit, and every animal is neutered, microchipped and vaccinated before leaving for their new home.

A spokesperson for the centre said: "Adopting a pet is as much a process of finding the right pet for you as it is the right family for our rescues.

"This is why we don’t just go ahead without a thorough assessment."

Nero

Breed: German Shepherd Dog
Age: 1 year 9 months

Nero is a lovely big boy who came into the care of St Giles after being found as a stray.

He creates close bonds with people and has made lots of friends at the rescue centre.

Nero loves his toys, especially running around after tennis balls and he also enjoys puzzle feeders and snuffle mats with tasty treats inside.

He enjoys going for walks and behaves well on his lead.

Currently undergoing clicker training, it is felt he would progress better with this in a home environment.

As he can be wary of new people, he will need a few visits from his potential new family to build a bond with him.

Based on St Giles' assessments, Nero could live with children aged 10 and above and could potentially live with another dog, pending suitable introductions, but no small furries.

Aladdin

Breed: Lurcher
Age: 3 years and 3 months

Aladdin is a very sweet and friendly boy who came to St Giles as a stray. This unfortunately means little is known about his past, including his precise age.

Staff at the rescue centre feel he would enjoy having doggie friends when out and about and could potentially live with another dog after suitable introductions.

He would prefer not to live with young children as he is sensitive to noise and sudden movements and will also need somewhere with few visitors as he can find meeting lots of new people overwhelming.

He does love to have a cuddle and some sausages as treats.

His confidence has really grown and now he would like to be able to share the sofa with on an evening.

Aladdin is an energetic dog who needs someone who can put in lots of time and effort to help him learn how to settle in a home.

He would benefit from a large garden to zoom around in, long countryside walks, and lots of enrichment and training games.

AJ

Somerset County Gazette: AJ is being cared for at St Giles Animal RescueAJ is being cared for at St Giles Animal Rescue

Breed: Lurcher
Age: 4 years 1 month

AJ is a very sweet boy who loves his human friends. He loves to play with balls and tug toys in the paddocks.

He also loves his treats and is food motivated.

A potential owner will need to be willing to continue with AJ’s training, particularly on lead.

He can be vocal around other dogs however this is due to frustration. The team are working on this and he is doing well.

AJ would like someone who is home most of the time to help deal with potential separation anxiety and would do best in a rural home with owners who enjoy long countryside walks.

He needs a home with older childen, although he can be sociable, he needs further training with his manners so it is felt he currently needs to be the only dog in the home.
