SOMERSET has been placed on a wind alert that lasts for 33 hours.

Storm Barra is due to arrive in the county at around 9am tomorrow (Tuesday, December 7).

The Met Office has issued a yellow wind warning for the county lasting until 6pm the following day (Wednesday, December 8).

The office says strong winds could cause potential disruption to travel.

It is advising that we should expect:

  • Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely;
  • Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer;
  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely;
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is possible;
  • It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves.

Wind gusts of 50 to 60mph are expected inland, possibly reaching 60 to 65mph ion coastal areas.

There is also likely to be moderate to heavy rain and a low chance of lightning.

Western Provident Distribution is taking steps to act if the electricity network is impacted.

A WPD spokesperson said: "As Storm Barra is expected to bring strong winds and heavy rain on Tuesday and Wednesday this week, we have put a range of measures in place to ensure we’re ready for any impact on the electricity network."
