POLICE say landscape gardener Tim Chilcott, 36, suffered serious head injuries during an incident in Minehead in the early hours of Sunday.
A Devon and Somerset Ambulance Service spokesman said that on arrival Mr Chilcott was "unconscious but breathing". Paramedics were on the scene within two minutes following an emergency call at 1.13am.
Mr Chilcott was taken to Musgrove Park Hospital, in Taunton, but died on Monday afternoon.
Police discovered Mr Chilcott at the junction of Blenheim Road and The Avenue at about 1am - floral tributes have now been laid in the town centre in his memory.
There has been some speculation that Mr Chilcott was trying to get to Minehead Hospital to seek help when he was discovered.
Police said Mr Chilcott was a single man and confirmed he worked as a landscape gardener.
The results of a forensic post mortem carried out at Southmead Hospital, Bristol, on Tuesday, are being studied by police.
Mr Chilcott's family were unavailable for comment as the West Somerset County Gazette went to press.
