A TOTAL of £1,800 was raised for people affected or displaced by the war in Ukraine at Watchet's street fair on Sunday, March 6.

Watchet hosts a street fair on the first Sunday of the month from March to October, featuring market stalls, live entertainment, and children's activities.

The fairs have been running since 2016, and they are organised by a sub-committee of the Watchet Coastal Communities Team (WCCT).

At Sunday's fair, there was a stall for attendees to donate to the Disaster Emergency Committee's Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal, aimed particularly at people who may not have been able to donate to charities online.

The stall also sold sunflower seeds - the national flower of Ukraine - to raise money for people affected by the conflict following Russia's invasion of the country.

Event organiser Molly Quint said: "Watchet Street Fair are delighted that the first street fair of the season in Watchet was such a huge success with nearly 50 stalls of various lovely items, hot food stalls from around the world, fun toys for children, and entertainment from our own town band.

"With such serious problems in Ukraine, it was decided to have a stall where people could donate money to this cause.

"Watchet Coastal Community Team are thrilled to announce the huge figure of £1,800 was raised.

"The street fair donated all its profits from this fair to it, and children were able to buy sunflower seeds, the emblem flower of Ukraine, organised by Kate Kennedy, to add a little brightness through the summer months.

"We want to thank all the wonderful people of Watchet and visitors who have given so generously to this cause and to WCCT, which will be sending this money through the official collecting point to help the people who are in such need."

The next Watchet street fair will be held on Saturday, April 3.
