A SOMERSET author will answer questions and sign copies of her latest book at an event at Brendon Books in Taunton later this month.

Rachel Edwards’ second novel Lucky was published in June by Fourth Estate, an imprint of HarperCollins.

Lucky is “a breathtaking tale of gambling, migration, betrayal and the risks we all take to survive.”

Describing the novel’s plot, a spokesperson said: “Lucky is the story of Etta, who is in her mid-thirties and keen to nudge her loving but commitment-phobic partner Ola towards marriage and children.

“Ola is worried about money and reluctant to get engaged before they have enough saved for a house deposit, so Etta quietly begins to make money on an online gambling site – until she begins losing.

“Soon she has secretly lost their entire savings.

“Luckily, Etta has made a friend on the site, a friend who has recently won big.

“Perhaps she can persuade him to give her a loan, just until she wins the money back.

“What could possibly go wrong?”

Her debut novel Darling, published in May 2018, was described in the national press as “the first Brexit thriller”.

Edwards received positive reviews for Darling from the likes of the The Guardian and The Sunday Times after its publication.

She also wrote a column for The Sunday Times Magazine throughout summer 2020 and has appeared twice on Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour.

Before becoming an author, she studied at King’s College London, spent time working in publishing, and spent 12 years as a freelance writer.

Since she started writing novels, she has appeared at literary festivals and events around the UK.

Edwards moved to Somerset in February 2021 and is looking forward to meeting local readers at Brendon Books (Bath Place, Taunton).

To celebrate the paperback launch of Lucky, she will be interviewed at the bookshop on Friday, March 25.

The event will start at 6:30pm and will end with Edwards taking questions and signing books.

For £8.99, you can buy a ticket that comes with a copy of Lucky.

Tickets on their own cost £5.
