A NEW Covid-19 vaccination centre has opened in the former Taunton Bus Station.

Bookings are being taken for the following groups of people to get their jabs:

five to 11-year-olds;

spring boosters for the over 75s and immunosuppressed;

first and second jabs and boosters for the over 12s.

There is free parking on site at the Tower Street facility and plenty of availability, according to NHS Somerset.

The Tower Vaccination Centre, which has undergone a number of repairs ahead of its opening, replaces the riverside Firepool jab centre, which closed on Wednesday, March 16 after putting more than 111,000 vaccines in arms. Both sites belong to Somerset West and Taunton Council.

Previous to that, vaccinations were given at Taunton Racecourse.

Cllr Marcus Kravis, SWT executive member for assets, said: “SWT are delighted to continue working in partnership with the Somerset NHS Foundation Trust to contribute to the ongoing roll out of vaccines.

“The lease of our Firepool site to the NHS had a fixed end date of March 31 to ensure that vital infrastructure works could commence this year subject to planning permission being granted.

“We are pleased to be able to accommodate the vaccination centre on our premises at the former bus station site in the town centre and hope that people will find this a convenient location to visit and keep their vaccinations up to date.”
