Taunton Town 2-1 Farnborough

TAUNTON Town Football Club are officially the Pitching In Southern League champions after defeating Farnborough 2-1 at home on the final day of the season.

Results elsewhere did not matter as a win was more than enough for the Peacocks to claim the league title.

It rounds off a truly remarkable campaign with Taunton Town finishing on 91 points from 42 league games and means they win the title five points clear of second placed Hayes & Yeading.

After the match manager Rob Dray said: "We did it! We are the champions!"

Perhaps what he said was a bit more expressive than that suggests, but it is within reason you would say.

Taunton have had a turbulent season, starting the campaign with over ten first team players out with injury or Covid, with many people not giving them a chance at promotion. Let alone a league title.

Dray added: "This bunch of lads are amazing, they have all fought so hard throughout the season, they deserve this.

"The staff, volunteers and fans have all been amazing and deserve to celebrate tonight as well.

"What a day for the club, and what a club this is."

After the match the fans stormed on to the pitch to celebrate with the players and unlike a normal pitch invasion it was welcomed, and the players and fans sung songs together and truly enjoyed the moment.

Well done Taunton Town, a truly remarkable campaign.

The match against Farnborough was proudly sponsored by the Somerset County Gazette and Govier Joinery and Plastering.
