Several gardens in Shepton Mallet will be open for public viewing this summer to raise money for the Shepton Snowdrops project.

Money collected from the fundraiser will be used to buy snowdrop bulbs to plant around the town this autumn.

Eighteen gardens across the town will be open for public viewing, with the majority providing refreshments for those attending.

Some of the gardens will also be selling plants to help with the fundraiser.

Kilver Court Garden is among the list of gardens opening doors.

This will be the first time the estate has opened to the public since it’s change of ownership in recent years.

Each garden will also have a ‘painted pebble treasure trail’, for children and families.

With funds raised from the event, the community group will plant snowdrops across Shepton Mallet, which will flower in the spring of 2023.

The significance of snowdrops in Shepton Mallet dates back to the 19th Century, when horticulturalist James Allen became the first person to ever breed new varieties from wild snowdrops.

James Allen has been credited with breeding at least 100 varieties of snowdrop.

Entry for the garden open day costs £6, and tickets can be bought in advance on the Shepton Snowdrops website.
