A MAN has started a petition to install safety fencing on a busy Taunton bridge “to deter incidents from happening”.

The man, who does not want to be named, has called for safety fencing to be installed on the Obridge viaduct after police “were called to a concern for welfare incident” on Tuesday, May 3.

He said: “There are a few key points as to why I created the petition for safety fencing on the bridge.

“The biggest reason I suppose is to deter incidents from happening more frequently.

“The bridge itself isn’t in very good condition when it comes to pedestrian safety either, the pavements are very narrow and very close to traffic.

“Also the fact it’s a main road and one of Taunton’s most occupied routes. This means the closure impacts industries like emergency services being able to attend calls a lot quicker.

“Not to mention the cost of a road closure and use of resources needed to contain the area safely.

“I started the petition yesterday evening [Tuesday, May 3] and live in the local area and it does impact a lot of Taunton in general.

“Yesterday [Tuesday, May 3] particularly had an impact on my decision to create the petition, yes.”

The man also said that “the bridge itself is dangerous” and he is also concerned about general traffic and pedestrians.

He added: “The bridge has signs on either end warning of severe crosswinds in bad weather too and the bridge itself is dangerous for pedestrians walking over it.

“So some kind of barriers also separating the pavements and road would be ideal too.”
