A FORMER pub in Taunton town centre that has been closed for a number of years looks set to re-open this summer.

Gareth Field, who is currently landlord of another pub in the town owned by the Stonegate group, wants to open up his own venue at 61 High Street.

It was formerly the Light Bob for a number of years and more recently for a brief period The Perfect Fifth, but has remained vacant ever since.

Mr Field, who is currently landlord of the Victoria Gate, in East Reach, has unveiled plans to open the High Street venue as the Egg Basket pub and live venue.

Somerset County Gazette:

Gareth Field, who hopes to open the new pub this summer.

"I see it as though I'm putting all my eggs in one basket by opening my own pub and live venue," said Mr Field.

"Everything's going well. I've rewired and decorated the place and there are a few other things to do.

"I've applied to Somerset West and Taunton Council for a licence and I want to open as soon as I get it. I'm hoping to be ready for the summer."

He has applied under the name The Taunton Roast Company, which he runs from the Victoria Gate along with a comedy club, for a licence to sell alcohol for consumption on and off the premises between 10am and 2am on Mondays and Tuesday, and from 10am to 4am Wednesdays to Sundays and for the performance of live and recorded music.

Mr Field, who lives with his partner and four children, said: "I've been trying to get this place since 2018.

"I've been given a really good deal and just need to do some more work on the premises.

"I'm hoping to help bring some life back to the town centre as one of the few independent pubs."

He has been at the Victoria Gate - formerly known as the White Hart - for a number of years and is contracted to remain there until October.

"I put my life savings into turning it around and tripled the sales since taking over," added Mr Field.

"I've built a fantastic team there and I want to take some of them with my to the Egg Basket when I open.

"I can't wait to get going, hopefully this summer."
