THE Minehead Girlguiding Division held a Platinum Jubilee Celebration in the Williton Pavilion for approximately 70 Rainbows, Brownies, and Guides.

The 5-15-year-olds came from across West Somerset for the first large-scale event since the Covid-19 shutdowns.

The girls were split into patrols of 9 called Corgi’s, Crowns, Equestrians, and the leaders all had royal names from Prince Charles to Princess Charlotte.

Thousands of stickers and gems were used in the making of crowns, robes, bookmarks, and elephants, as the Queen was in Africa when she heard she’d become Queen.

Somerset County Gazette:

After a drink and piece of celebration cake, decorated with the Girlguiding and Scouting Jubilee badge by a local bakery, the models displayed the robes on a catwalk. Relay races to make a corgi followed.

The afternoon finished with action songs around an indoor campfire and included a corgi song and the Somerset County President, Margaret Maltby made several presentations to the leaders, including an Adult Leadership Qualification to Lucy Franklin, 10-year long service awards to Martha Day, Kim Richards and Lauren Palmer, 20-year long service awards to Katrina Bale and Vicky Hatch and a 30-year long service award to Karen Wright.

Somerset County Gazette:

The children were all given a certificate and a specially commissioned Somerset County Queen’s Jubilee Celebrations badge to help them remember a fun-filled afternoon where new friends were made.

All this was provided free to the children due to a generous grant received from Magna Housing.

The next big event is on Thursday, June, 2 when Martha Day will be presented with her Queen’s Guide Award at the Somerset County Jubilee Beacon event at the Bishop’s Palace, Wells.

The Queen’s Guide Award is the highest award given to members of Girlguiding and Martha has had to work especially hard to achieve this over the past few years.
