A GOOD Samaritan came to the assistance of an elderly woman who was knocked out in a hit and run e-scooter incident outside a Taunton church.

Eddie Impey was driving past St John the Evangelist Church, in Park Street, when he spotted the victim, known only as Emma, lying on the pavement in a pool of blood.

Mr Impey pulled over and cradled her in his arms as he rang 999 before she passed out ahead of an ambulance arriving a couple of minutes later.

He added that ahead of his arrival at the scene opposite County Hall, where Emma works, a number of vehicles simply drove past following the incident shortly after 9am yesterday (Tuesday, May 17).

"This poor, tiny lady had been hit from behind by two of our local male youths on Zipp scooters," said Mr Impey.

"They simply hit her and then made off without even slowing down.

"I turned my car around, stopped and got out to give first aid to this poor lady.

"She was bruised, had her face smashed in from the impact with the pavement, along with cuts to her legs, seriously damaged knees and concussion.

"She was in a total state of collapse and covered in blood.

"I was trying to support her as I rang 999, but she passed out in my arms while I was speaking on the phone."

After a passing ambulance pulled over, Emma was taken to nearby Musgrove Park Hospital.

Mr Impey said: "There must be CCTV image of the two youths involved.

"I can't bear the thought of nobody being brought to justice for something so heinous.

"She was just hit and they carried on, leaving her for dead."

A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) said: “We were called at 09:09hrs on Tuesday 17 May to an incident in Taunton. We sent a double-crewed land ambulance and conveyed one patient to Musgrove Park Hospital."
