An American fashion giant could open a new, larger store in Somerset if plans for a new outlet are approved.

Calvin Klein currently has a small unit within the Clarks Village retail outlet in Street, specialising in female lingerie.

The company has now applied to relocate to fill the vacant Clarks outlet on Farm Road in the centre of the site, allowing it to sell a wider range of apparel.

The unit lies in the southern section of Clarks Village, within easy reach of Street’s High Street and the Northsite and Southleaze car parks.

The existing Clarks Shop – which is now closed – will be extensively refurbished under the plans, with new fitting rooms being provided and widespread changes being made to the displays, storage area and staff facilities.

While Calvin Klein’s current outlet specialises in underwear, the new store will include a wide range of jeans, tops and dresses, according to official planning documents.

The company has not confirmed how many new jobs, whether full- or part-time, will be created within the refurbished unit.

However, it has confirmed the new unit will be open between 9am and 6pm from Monday to Saturday and from 10am to 5pm on Sundays.

Mendip District Council is expected to make a decision on the plans within the coming months.
