DRIVERS will not be able to use the Toneway in Taunton for three nights next week as part of ongoing work to increase the capacity of the Creech Castle junction.

Travel Somerset, the county council's roads information service, has confirmed the busy commuter road will be closed on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (June 20-22) between 8pm and 6am.

The service tweeted: “Access to some local businesses and the Kidney Dialysis Unit will be maintained and this will have a vehicle escort within these times as and when there is a requirement.”

Somerset County Council is upgrading the Toneway's Creech Castle junction to ease congestion and improve access to the county town.

The £8.3 million improvement scheme began on August 9, 2021.

Work was scheduled to begin in 2020 but was delayed because of the Covid pandemic.

The county council's description of the scheme says: “The upgrade is designed to increase the capacity of the Toneway Creech Castle junction by widening and adding additional lanes.

“Once complete, there will be three straight ahead lanes in each direction on the Toneway.

“There will also be three lanes for traffic turning from the A38 Bridgwater Road from either direction onto the Toneway.”

The A38 Bridgwater Road to the north of the Toneway is closed to traffic for the duration of the works.

Taunton's two park and ride schemes remain free to use for all passengers while the work is ongoing.
