COASTGUARDS rescued a woman with a suspected broken ankle after she fell on rocks in Watchet.

They responded to a 999 call about the incident at Helwell Bay from the woman's husband at lunchtime yesterday (Thursday, June 16).

The coastguard helicopter was called in initially while she was cared for by coastguards from Watchet and Minehead.

But it was cancelled after the woman was stretchered off the beach and carried to the cliff top.

She was then transferred to her husband's car and driven to hospital for treatment.

A Watchet Coastguard spokesperson said: "(She was) conveyed direct to hospital for treatment as unfortunately due to the current pressures on the ambulance service there was likely to be a considerable delay in their attendance at the scene.

"On one of the hottest days of the year the ability to get the casualty out of the sun and into shade was an additional factor considered in a quick evacuation.

"We wish the lady a speedy recovery."

The husband had provided the maritime rescue co-ordination centre with a what3words location and British grid reference, which allowed the rescuers to immediately know the exact location in the bay, as on arrival there were several couples walking or enjoying sitting in the sun, which would have otherwise caused delays.
