TAUNTON’S Toneway Creech Castle junction improvement project is entering the final phase towards completion later this summer – and will need six weeks of night-time closures.

The £8.3m project, designed to increase capacity at the junction and improve cycling and pedestrian connections, started in August 2021 and is progressing well.

As part of the essential work to complete this scheme and allow the team full access to the road there will need to be night-time closures of Toneway for about six weeks from July 25.

Undertaking the work in the evening when the traffic levels are much lower will significantly reduce the impact of the finishing works.

The closures will be in place from 8pm until 6am weekday evenings only from 25 July to 31 August. The road will be open during the evening at weekends.

This will be a full closure from the Hankridge roundabout to the Asda junction inbound and from the Wickes roundabout to the Hankridge roundabout outbound.

There may be some occasions when a night-time road closure can be avoided, or the team can close the road later in the evening.

Updates will be posted regularly on Travel Somerset Twitter – @travelsomerset and Facebook.

Work on the Toneway Creech Castle junction project includes additional lanes on the approach to the junction, as well as new crossings for those on foot and bike.

A key feature of the project also involves widening of the Bathpool Bridge on the A38 Bridgwater Road.

This is to increase the capacity at the junction and widen cycling and pedestrian facilities.

Somerset County Council’s executive lead member for transport and digital, Cllr Mike Rigby said: “We are extremely grateful to local residents, businesses, and road users for their support and patience during this complex and challenging scheme – it’s excellent news that we are now approaching the final phase.

“Once the work is complete we’ll have a much-improved approach to our County Town, with greater capacity to meet with future residential and economic growth.

“Please do plan ahead during these weeks and if you do have any concerns there is a contact number and FAQs about the project on the Travel Somerset website.”
