MP Rebecca Pow has resigned as Environment Minister.

The MP announced her decision with a series of tweets this morning, Thursday, July 7, amid reports Boris Johnson resigned as Tory leader.

Ms Pow said her decision came as “values, integrity and the morals by which I live are at stake”.

Here is her tweet and a photo of the letter she shared on social media.

In her letter, Ms Pow sad she waited until now to tender her resignation "partly as I am at home suffering with covid and party because I thought you would do the right thing and step aside".

But the timing of her announcement has attracted criticism on Twitter.

Ms Pow's original tweet has been configured to only allow people she mentions to reply to it.

But there have been numerous responses to a tweet by BBC reporter Lewis Goodall.

Richard South said: "That heroic moment when you cross the finish line in first place, only to realise that the race was being run yesterday."

Michael Gollop said: "Running after the bandwagon after it careers down the street ..."

Ms Pow was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs on 10 September 2019.

She was previously a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport between 23 May 2019 and 10 September 2019.
