SOMERSET'S star opening batsman Will Smeed has said “there is a lot of confidence in the side" going into Finals Day on Saturday.

"If we play to our potential then we can beat anyone there," he said.

Will Smeed warmed up for Saturday’s Vitality Blast T20 Finals Day with 90 off 53 balls ball with seven fours and six sixes to help England Lions to a comfortable six wicket victory over South Africa in a 50 over match at the Cooper Associates County Ground on Tuesday.

After his innings the 20 year old looked ahead to Saturday.

“There is a lot of confidence in the side and if we play to our potential then we can beat anyone there, but Im guessing all the teams will be saying the same thing and thats the reason they have also got there.

“It was disappointing to lose last year so hopefully a few people can stick their hands up and get over the line.

“The game we had here was epic and the crowds here have been awesome. Its great to have full houses in and when Rilee was smacking it like he was it was bound to be rocking!

“There is a lot of confidence in the side and if we don’t get off to a flyer it doesn’t matter too much as we will catch up. Batting so deep in the top order you can play freely and how we want to.

“This year I think we have got a better idea of what our game looks like. Last year there wasn’t much experience in the side but having played more I think that we all have a clearer idea of our role in the side now, which potentially we have now.

“We bat so deep and thats one of our strengths. We seem to be able to get oursvles out of trouble with 8 9 and 10 winning games, which is nice batting up top as you have faith in the guys behind you.

He added: “Finals Day is different to any other day in the calendar and its tough on your body and tough mentally but hopefully we can draw on our experience  and I think as a side we feel a lot more complete that we did last year, which will hopefully win us the comp.”
