POLICE closed a main road in Somerset this afternoon (Sunday, July 31) after smoke billowed across the area from an out of control bonfire.
Fire control received several 999 calls shortly before 3pm to a fire involving a pile of tyres and rubbish at Rode, near Frome, which was well alight.
After a fire engine from Trowbridge and a second one from Frome and a water bowser from Pewsey attended, police were also requested to attend due to "smoke from the incident potentially affecting the nearby A361".
Officers closed the A361 for a period, while further fire engines were sent to the scene from Bradford-on-Avon and Warminster as the fire had spread to the perimeter fencing and grassland of an adjoining property.
The A361 was closed at Frome Road, Beckington due to fire service activity from the A36 Beckington Roundabout to the B3109 Bradford Road, Rode.

During the incident householders were advised to keep windows and doors closed.
The fire has since been brought under control allowing the road to reopen.
