PLANS have been submitted to turn two floors of offices above an estate agents into a new single dwelling.

Somerset West and Taunton Council (SWT) has received a change of use planning application regarding the first and second-floor offices at 42 High Street.

The ground floors of 41 and 42 High Street are occupied by Webbers Estate Agents, which would “remain intact” if the plans go ahead.

The planning application said: “The proposal allows for the change of use of the upper floors of No 42 High Street from office use to residential.

“There are several examples within the existing High Street where this change has previously been undertaken following the obtaining of planning consent.”

It added: “The proposal aims to maximise an existing building within a prominent and sustainable location with the Taunton town centre.

“The existing occupants of the building will be able to continue to occupy No 41 and the ground floor of No 42, ensuring the shop frontage will be unaffected by the proposals.

“The appearance of the building within the High Street will be unaffected by the works.”

“The only changes will occur at the rear of the property, where a new set of double-doors will be introduced in lieu of an existing first-floor window and the flat roof area located above the single storey office will be utilised as a modest terrace area.”

The applicant said the internal layout will “require minimal intervention to create a new dwelling” and the “main external fabric of the building will be retained”.

These plans can be found on the SWT online planning portal under the application number 38/22/0231.

The online public consultation period will end on Friday, August 5 and the target decision date is Thursday, September 1.
