A sewage tanker has crashed in Weymouth.

The vehicle has overturned at Bincombe Bumps roundabout, just before the relief road at the Littlemoor turn-off.

Witnesses say the driver is out of the vehicle and a spokesperson for Enviromental Waste Management, who own the tanker, confirmed nobody was hurt.

One witness, Gary, said the smell was ‘gut wrenching’ and the traffic was “bump to bump all the way from Preston Beach Road right into town”.

Dorset Police were called to the incident at 12.40pm and attended alongside the fire service.

A spokesperson said: "We were called at 12.40pm to reports of an overturned tanker at in Weymouth, leaking an unknown substance.

“Officers attended alongside the fire service and the local authority environmental health team have been made aware.

“The road is currently blocked and we’re asking members of the public to avoid the area while clean up and vehicle recovery takes place.”

Road closures are in place between the roundabout and Littlemoor Library.

There is heavy traffic along Littlemoor Road and drivers are being urged to avoid the area for now.

A spokesperson for EWM said: "We are aware of the incident, fortunately nobody is injured.

"We are currently investigating and working with the relevant agencies to ensure the incident is dealt with appropriately."

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We are currently dealing with an overturned tanker. This is affecting local traffic so please avoid the area if you can."
