A BUSINESSMAN is opening a deli in a village near Taunton to cater for locals, cyclists and tourists.

Mark Rollins is opening MTM Deli in Blagdon Hill in the same premises as MTM Tile Showroom, which he has operated for the past 15 years.

Villagers are supporting the venture, which will showcase mainly local producers.

"I'm trying to provide a local facility, because there currently isn't one," said Mr Rollins (pictured).

Somerset County Gazette:

"I've asked local people what they think and there have been more than 40 supportive responses.

"I'm looking to serve the community, supporting local businesses and trying to bring tourism in.

"We get a lot of cyclists passing through as it's an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and I want to cater for their needs.

"It's all about showcasing what Somerset has to offer."

As well as serving as a community shop, takeaways such as packed lunches will also be available.

There are a number of picnic tables on the nearby village green, where customers can tuck into their takeaways.

MTM Deli is due to open on Wednesday, August 24.

"We're starting off relatively small scale and then growing the business and employing local people," said Mr Rollins.

"We want to tailor the business to what our customers would like to see.

"I want to be different to the supermarkets with their home deliveries.

"There will be a guest cheese every month and vegetable boxes with fresh products in season.

"I'm actively trying to encourage cycle groups and for the business to be environmentally friendly."
