AN "eccentric exhibition of extraordinary characters and objects" opens in Glastonbury later this month.

A Cabinet of Curiosities displaying the work by Frank Howard and Jim Pilston runs in the Heart of the Tribe art gallery in High Street from Thursday, August 25 until Tuesday, September 20

Frank Harwood remains one of Heart of The Tribe’s most popular artists to date and his work is heavily influenced by fables and nostalgia.

He explores how memories get entangled with the common cultural references of his childhood, including comics he read and the television he watched growing up.

He uses a “simple comic style” of bold lines with repeated patterns, playing with flat space and vivid colours.

A more recent Heart of The Tribe core artist, Jim Pilston has already made an impact on the local art scene by gaining a keen following of collectors.

His work is influenced by legend and folklore, with sculptures that are colourful and full of intrigue.

With just a vague sense of the intended outcome when starting a piece, Jim works very instinctively to see what kind of character emerges, whether it is an angel, devil, monster or God.

He said: "I get a thrill out of creating something magical out of materials that can be found in skips and rubbish piles.”

Frank and Jim’s work harmoniously complement each other in this unconventional and vibrant exhibition of painting and sculpture.

There is often a humorous tone and both are inspired by themes of the past and mythology.

Heart of The Tribe Gallery is open every day except Wednesdays between 11am and 5pm, with free entry.
